Week One - Introduction

The course and the student cohort; where are you and why design.

Webinar notes

Who?

Hello, I’m Amy. I am 25 years old and I’m from Warwick, England. Alongside my studies I work as a Decontamination Operator for a dental practice. In May 2020 I graduated from Birmingham City University with a BA in Photography. In my spare time you will always find me at a gig or festival, I really enjoy live music and I’ve been going to gigs since my early teens. I also love collecting records, I bought my first record player and record back in 2017 and I’ve been collecting them ever since. I currently have about 240 records in my collection, quite a few of them being limited editions and rare finds.

What?

I have always been a more creatively minded person, and my background is primarily in photography so I’m still pretty new to the world of graphic design. As mentioned above I studied my undergraduate degree at Birmingham City University and graduated in 2020. I still love Photography, in particular shooting 35mm film but since finishing my degree I’ve become more interested in graphic design. Although I still feel like a novice I’m excited to see how my practice develops and learn new skills.

Where?

I’m from Warwick, which is a small historic town in Warwickshire. I’ve been living here all my life except the three years I spent living in Birmingham while I completed my Undergraduate degree. Being a historic town Warwick has some really beautiful architecture including the castle, St Mary’s church, Lord Leycester Hospital and two of the medieval gates that were left standing (Eastgate and Westgate.) Being in the midlands I am also fortunate to be very easily connected to many other towns and cities.

Why?

I see design as a way to express myself, my thoughts and my ideas. I’ve always been a creatively minded person, I love being able to escape into another world. Design can also be used as a way to use your voice and tell stories, it speaks to people in many different ways. I want to learn more skills and push myself; graphic design excites me and allows me to use my passion for creativity.
